The cremation of Buddhist monk within the precincts of a Hindu Temple once again proves that Sri Lanka is a failed state

The cremation of a Sinhala Buddhist monk Kolomba Medhalankara Thero within the precincts of the Hindu temple at Neeraaviyadi, in Mullaitheevu District, is an act of desecration of a holy place of worship of the Tamils.  It was done in clear violation of the court order prohibiting the cremation at this site.  This is in clear violation of Article 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which guarantees "right to justice through a court of law." The violent mob was led by Bodu Bala Sena Secretary Gnanasara Thero who threatened and attacked the lawyers representing the Hindu worshipers trying to show the court order to stop the cremation within the temple premises.  The Sri Lanka police and army at the site did not prevent the attack on the Tamils and on the contrary, they were aiding the cremation in defiance of the court order prohibiting cremation at that site.

These events only prove that "in Sri Lanka, Buddhism has the foremost place and is above the law." The police and the army present at the site were aiding the violent Buddhist monks to carry out the cremation in defiance of the court order is in clear violation of Article 7 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which guarantees equal treatment under the law

These events once again prove that Sri Lanka is a failed state where there is no law and order and the Tamils cannot get equal protection under the law.  It is worth noting that the violent Sinhala Buddhist monk Gnanasara Thero was briefly in jail for inciting violence against Muslims and for contempt of court. However, he was soon pardoned by President Maithripala Sirisena and released to carry out his racist missions unabated.

It is beyond any doubt that Tamils cannot expect justice within Sri Lanka, a fact that has repeated many times over the last seven decades.  It is high time the UN member states realize their attempt at reconciliation in Sri Lanka is futile.  Tamils urgently demand UN intervention to prevent the ongoing genocide and protect the remaining Tamils in the island from further abuse by the occupying forces of Sri Lanka. Failure to do so will further destabilize this region.
